Assessment project champion
Decide who will lead the process (typically the board chair and company secretary, the governance or nominating committee)

Set assessment parameters
Decide which structures and individuals are to be assessed (including the chairman, board, committees and/or individual directors)

Set the desired outcomes
The board/committee needs to start by being clear on why they are undertaking the assessment — and what they want out of it. Clearly defined outcomes will determine to what extent the best practice assessment process has to be customized

Establish confidentiality protocols and procedures

The project champion decides on the assessment timeframe by setting the start and end dates. Timelines, together with deadlines, are then set for the assessment actions
